my mom is SUPER (hardcore, even) traditional and an extremely religious hindu, and when I told her that a lot of people (mostly white people and some indians) get offended when they see white people wearing bindis, her response was:
“What? why?! it’s to look pretty! it’s a sticker. that’s silly.”

It’s really more of a cultural thing these days. If my mom wants to look “traditional” she’ll wear a bindi with her sari/Indian clothes. Personally, I don’t give two shits about who wears a bindi.
